MV "Trina" successfully completed the Peregrino Project in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro
January, 2010

SAL has successfully completed the loading, transportation and transfer of offshore equipment for the Brazilian Peregrino Project. The array of cargo included a 630 mtons STP buoy, anchor chains, anchor piles and reels. At the end of September, SAL’s MV "Trina" loaded the equipment in Singapore. Due to the height of the buoy – 18 m –, the vessel sailed to Rio de Janeiro with an open hatch. On-site, the SAL vessel was not only used as a means of transportation but also as a storage unit for the supply vessel serving the oil field.

State of the art shipment: Pipelay tower from La Rochelle to Brazil

October 2009

In October 2009, SAL performed a state of the art shipment of a pipelay tower from La Rochelle to Brazil for its customer Technip. The unit with a weight of 900 mtons measured 16.7 x 22.24 x 39.4 m. Despite these extraordinary dimensions, SAL offered to lift the piece in its fully assembled state. To lift the assembled unit, SAL’s engineering team had to develop a highly complex lifting frame which was mounted at the tower in France. To support the heavy weight of the tower, the pier in La Rochelle had to be specifically strengthened for this operation. Hence the cargo on the pier was positioned at a distance of 32 m away from the vessel’s centerline, which was a challenging aspect in view of crane outreach. The cargo was loaded on the tanktop, and the vessel sailed to Brazil with an open hatch.

Four caissons, 320 mtons each, from China to Australia

Penglai, China – Preston, Australia

SAL’s MV "Maria" loaded four caissons of each 320 mtons measuring 21 x 10 x 11.50 m in Penglai, China destined for a new mining project in Cape Preston, Australia. The four caissons, which were contracted on a last in-first out voyage, were directly lowered into the water and installed onto foundation beneath water surface at Cape Preston by ship's own gear. This both interesting and difficult task was handled by SAL’s Shanghai office in cooperation with SAL's engineering section Lühe Engineering.

SAL Launches an Australian Office in Fremantle

Fremantle / Australia
August 3, 2009

SAL is shrugging off the global economic crisis by expanding its Australasian operations. On August 3, 2009 SAL opened an office in Fremantle, Western Australia.

Managing Director Berndt R. Olesen said the Australian expansion would be of great benefit to the region’s oil, gas, and mining industry and is part of a wider strategic plan to accommodate the growing shipping demand from the resources sectors in Australasia. "Many of our large clients, including BHP and Woodside, are based in Western Australia and with around $200B worth of oil and gas projects in the pipeline, the future of the Australian industry looks certain despite the downturn in international oil and gas production."

SAL Commissions Sietas To Build Two Heavy Lift Vessels

Steinkirchen, Germany
July 27, 2009

SAL commissions the Sietas shipyard with the construction of two heavy lift vessels of a new generation. The new buildings of type 183 will be the largest and most modern heavy lift ships in the world with a combined lifting capacity of 2,000 tons (2 x 1,000 tons) and a speed of up to 20 knots. The vessels can trade with an open hatch and accommodate exceptionally large loads.
Aside from their innovative technology, the vessels will also be certified with an "environmental passport" in compliance with the highest environmental protection specifications. These technical and ecological preconditions ensure that the vessels will be ready for employment in future markets including wind energy, offshore/oil and gas industries, industrial plants and other sectors.

The delivery of both new buildings will be in December 2010 and March 2011. The commission of these two vessels represents a continuation of a long standing and fruitful cooperation between SAL and the Sietas shipyard.

Two Massive Reactors Loaded in Mumbai

Mumbai, India
July 2009

Following closely on the historical feat of loading the heaviest piece of 585 mtons out of Mundra port in April this year, SAL and Sai Maritime & Management P.Ltd. created another record by booking and loading the heaviest piece out of Mumbai port in the beginning of July.

Nominated vessel MV Anne-Sofie (2 x 700 mtons SWL) loaded two massive reactors weighing 895 mtons (length 26.10 x width 8.10 x height 7.10 m) and 1,006 mtons (length 29.50 x width 8.10 x height 7.40 m) manufactured at Hazira by Larsen & Toubro.

Taking advantage of the calm weather, both reactors were loaded within a record time of 6 hours.

Moreover, the reactors were discharged in the same record time at destination port Eleusis/Greece.

Two reactors from Kobe to New Orleans & Corpus Christi

Kobe, Japan
May 2009

SAL was entrusted to transport two reactors of 941 mtons and 955 mtons and a length of 47.80 m each from Kobe/Japan to New Orleans and Corpus Christi in the USA. MV “Regine” carried out this loading operation in May 2009. The cargo was brought alongside vessel’s port side by barge, and the lifting operation of both reactors was performed in a tandem lift. For this operation, SAL used four pieces of vessel’s own 300 mtons shackles and 373 mtons grummets.

1,200 TPH SIMPORTER Ship Unloader Erected In Vung Tau, Vietnam

Vung Tau, Vietnam
End of April 2009

In April 2009, SAL’s latest new build vessel MV "REGINE" loaded  an approx. 350 mtons 1,200 TPH SIMPORTER Ship Unloader in Zhangjiagang, China, broken down into portal section (10 x 13 x 15.6 m) and boom section (50 x 23 x 11 m). After completion of loading, the vessel sailed directly to Vung Tau, Vietnam.

The challenging part of this operation was the shore side erection of both the sections, which was carried out by the vessel's own gear. Thanks to the close co-operation between SAL´s in-house technical division Luehe Engineering, the client VIGAN Engineering S.A. of Belgium, their freight forwarder Trans Global Projects Ltd. and the Master of MV "REGINE", a safe and smooth erection of the Ship Unloader was undertaken.

585 mtons Boiler Block From Mundra, India To Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia

Mundra Port, India
April 2009

SAL vessel MV "Annette" has loaded the heaviest piece handled by Mundra Port so far: a 585 mtons one package Boiler Block Assembly measuring 15.29 x 11.77 x 13 m. SAL's local partner SAI Maritime & Management was responsible for the freight management of the Boiler Block Assembly which is destined for Al Jubail.
The technical planning for loading the Boiler was done in close co-ordination between the consignor Thermax Logistics Team,  their nominated freight forwarder Panprojects, SAI Maritime,  and SAL's in-house technical department Lühe Engineering. Four month prior loading, all technical details were planned, e.g. the sizes of the lifting lugs on the boiler, shackles, spreaders, slings, which were all available on board the vessel to ensure a smooth operation in record time.
