A World First – The Pohokura Project
Pohokura Oil Field, New Zealand
July 2006

In July, 2006 SAL successfully completed the offshore installation of a jacket on to the ocean floor. The project was initiated in May 2005, when SAL was appointed by Technip to design and execute a unique transportation concept for a 420 mtons steel jacket and an offshore wellhead platform. The installation of this jacket and platform in the Taranaki Basin off New Zealand for the Pohokura gas field was a complex process that required a complete transport analysis and offshore operation procedures.
Thus, SAL – in co-operation with their client Technip – engineered a method to rotate the 56-metre-long steel jacket during the lifting process, keeping the structure one metre off the ground at all times. In a world first, the complex structure was turned from a horizontal to a vertical position by the vessel’s own cranes and loaded into its hold where it extended 42 metres out of the hatch into the sky. The journey, which took seven days travelling at a reduced service speed of 18 knots through some of the most treacherous of oceans, was managed in compliance with the rigid safety requirements of the classification society Germanischer Lloyd. In addition, the voyage was continuously monitored for changes in weather conditions via satellite by the Houston Weather Bureau.
Compared with traditional methods for sea transport utilising barges, SAL’s MV Annegret averaged a speed three times that of a barge, resulting in less fatigue on the jacket’s structure and increasing its lifespan by around 10 years.
With the MV Annegret mooring just four metres from the installation jackup rig, the jacket was lowered to the ocean floor. A motion mooring analysis system, including model simulations to predict mooring line tensions, was conducted by Germanischer Lloyd in Germany and MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) to ensure the viability of the first-time procedure.

In May 2006, SAL has been certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 – the highest certification standards obtainable in respect of procedures for health, safety and environmental protection. This certification will be extended to all vessels under SAL agency within the next 2 years, making them the first heavy-lift ships in the market with a distinct HSE certification. The on-going implementation of these standards on board and ashore will be supervised by SAL’s in-house safety/quality management division.
